In the spirit of the season...how about sharing our favorite seasonal or inspirational songs and movies.
For me, the song is...Let There Be Peace on Earth....the words are just beautiful and always make me emotional.
As far as holiday movies...Back in the day...when the kids were little...Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas..it was always so much fun snuggling on the couch with hot chocolate and watching it year after year. I actually bought myself a copy of it. Now....ELF....I watch that with my grands....no matter how many time I've seen it...it still cracks me up!

Great post! I too am a big fan of Emmet Otter and my own children enjoy it. White Christmas is one of my favorite movies of all time and no Christmas would be complete without the oldies but goodies: Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, and Frosty the Snowman. Although it is very traditional, Silent Night is one of my favorite carols. I think it truly speaks of the solemnity of the season, which is sometimes forgotten in the hustle and bustle. I also love the song Grown Up Christmas List, especially the version sung by Amy Grant. It has a timeless message. Merry Christmas to all.
ReplyDeleteBack when the kids were little, it was a tradition to watch the Muppets Christmas Carol.
ReplyDeleteI, myself wouldn't think of missing National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Chevy Chase is the best, especially when the brother in law drops by in his RV with the gang.
Favorite Christmas: Santa Baby!
How many of you remember Bing Crosby's "White Christmas?"
ReplyDeleteSong? Chestnuts Roasting Around the Fireplace~
Grandma Got run over by a Reindeer
All I want for Christmas is YOU!
But Margaret's song is definitely the best "Let there be Peace on Earth!
How come the "other blog" can't seem to "let go", enjoy Christmas for the JOY it truly brings; not be Debbie Downers as my kids call me; for every negative word that comes out of your mouth, express a good nice. Surround yourself with babies; thats what I would of done, had we not lost my grandson; but now we're all doing good - and the girls and I are still shopping, still singing "Santa Baby!" and still enjoying life as if should be lived.
ReplyDeleteSO come on Cristo-Taylor bloggers, think of something fun you'd like to do with your blog; don't be such a pessimist that on Christmas Eve and Day; you be a debbie downer when you should be Fa La La Laing around the Town of East Greenbush. We could even meet at the Holy Sepulchre Cemeteries and sing carols; they may not here us - but their spirit will be with us as it is always. Come on A & C; put your thinking caps on - and go Fa La La -ing some evening.
Come on, now lets sing at least two versus for our wonderful better halfs as we're making them breakfast: You know we could always go over to the Legion and practice on Friday night!
ReplyDeleteSanta Babt, slip a sable under the tree for me; been an awful good girl; Santa Baby so hurry down the chimney tonight. Santa Cutie and fill my stockings with a duplex, and checks Sign your "X" on the line, Santa Cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight. I hope all of you women are out there, singing this song to them as they are making breakfast for you.
okay, it's White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life----these are classics! Everyone should reintroduce these into their homes to share with their children and grandchildren. Modern day ones are: Christmas Story (Ralphie!!You'll shoot your eye out!!!!), Prancer, Christmas Vacation, and Home Alone. Do yourselves a favor and get every one of these; also, the bomb of bomb songs is one a lot of people do know, but, just not by this artist but once you download it from ITunes or whatever, you'll be addicted big time: It's, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Vince Vance and the Valiants sung by Lisa Layne at 3:47 in length. Go ahead, you'll be oh, so glad you did! Another fav is "Mary, Did You Know" by Kenny Rogers and Winona Judd!! The Best!!! Merry Christmas everyone.
ReplyDeleteBarbara,
ReplyDeleteStop worrying about the "other blog"--they lost remember!! Enjoy the holiday!! To me you give credit to it--ignore it.
Lets put our capital into solving the towns problems, we have the majority. Remember all towns have problems and make 2011 the year we to remember. Not by trash talk--leave that to them. Shows how well it worked for them, lets not fall to their level.
Merry Christmas too ALL!!!
S.
All of the movies mentioned are favorites...and classics. They each evoke certain memories. There's ones you watch with your children, grandchildren, watched with your siblings and of course the older ones with yor parents. I have wonderful memories of watching older ones with my Mom. Another one, not mentioned that we loved was Bells of St. Mary with Bing Crosby.
ReplyDeleteI love the song "Mary, Did you Know". Also, Elvis was not just the King of Rock N Roll...he did beautiful Gospel Music.
This all brings back so many good thoughts!
It's nice to remember the reason for the season!
Margaret - SUPER IDEA!!! So difficult to narrow the field, though!
ReplyDeleteSongs:
- White Christmas,
- The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, written by Mel Torme. Truth be told, I love chestnuts!!!),
- I'll Be Home for Christmas,
- Silent Night and
- O Holy Night.
Movies:
- Amahl and the Night Visitors (haven't seen in ages!),
- Miracle on 34th Street (I still put a cane next to the fireplace) and
- It's a Wonderful Life.
Allow me to stray from the songs and movies to live theatre:
Let's not forget A Christmas Carol
Bring the kids (from 1 to 92) to see The Nutcracker - - - a super time will be had by all!!! (I love to play the Overture when guests arrive during the holidays!!!)
When I was a tot, my Aunt would call to tell my brother and I that she'd just heard sleigh bells overhead - so we'd better to get sleep. No way could we sleep knowing Santa was coming (I'd pull the covers over my head and eventually cry myself to sleep, afraid he wouldn't stop!!).
Margaret, thanks for the stroll down memory lane!!!
"Although it's been said,
many times, many ways,
Merry Christmas to you!!!"
- (The Christmas Song)
And "God bless Us, Every One!"
- (A Christmas Carol)
Pete Stenson
Silent Night has to be my all time favorite - impossible to get through a candle-lit Xmas Eve service without the beauty of this song bringing tears to my eyes. After Church, it's time to start a fire, pour a glass (or 2 or 3) of wine, cuddle up and let Kenny G and his sax help you to remember the true spirit and peace of christmas. May the true spirit of Christmas carry us through another year.

Although it's not a holiday song...a special song for my wife and I is "Time of the Season". It's our song!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else out there have a "special" personal song?
My wife and kids bought me the Charlie Brown Christmas CD set. Its four separate music CD's and I can't listen to it enough. It always gets me "in the Spirit" !
ReplyDelete5:53 - the Vince Guaraldi Trio is one of the groups I grew up listening too. His Charlie Brown sound tracks is classic !
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a musician for years and we listened to Jazz ALL the time ! Memories ! Thanx !
As long as we're sharing good times...anyone have a favorite Christmas memory?
ReplyDeleteWe were a large family and whenever I think of Christmas morning the first thing that comes to mind is the Christmas stockings...hung from one end of the mantle to the other in birth order with our names on the stockings. Coloring books sticking out...tangerines way down in the toe! Truly an awesome sight!
I just recently saw a little documentary thing on cable about how the Charlie Brown Christmas show came to be. The sponsor called Charles Schulz agent and asked if he had ever considered doing a Christmas show. The guy said as a matter of fact he's working on one now, then called Schulz and told him he'd better think one up and do it. Schulz insisted on the Bible quotes from Linus, which was a controverisal thing, and when it went to air it was expected to be a one shot flop.
ReplyDeleteSo much for "Happy Holiday" greetings for the "Xmas" Season being what the public wants.
A lot of kids grew up with Vince Guaraldi's music sinking into their senses, and I know I'm one who views that as my introduction to Jazz, which then affected my musical tastes later in life. So I enjoy a lot of CD's with jazz interpretations of Holiday Classics.
A personal favorite song is Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas... from the movie Meet Me in St. Louis, introduced by Judy Garland. Along with some others here, I'm moved by Mary did You Know?, especially the touching rendition by Kathy Mattea. The very concept just grabs me as a parent.
The other night I caught It's a Wonderful Life on TV, and was caught up in the feel good community message. I enjoy seeing the different versions of A Christmas Carol, especially the one with Allistair whatsis from the 50's.
Seeing the neighborhood lights on crisp snowy evenings brings much nostalgia, memories of being out after supper under the street lights come back very strong. I can really identify with Ralphie, and that uncontrollable anticipation, hoping for dreams to come true with that special toy, while checking out the store windows, and catalogs.
Christmas time is a favorite time for me. It's the most wonderful time of the year.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Saw the rockettes saturday for the Christmas extravaganza at Radio City ....excellent show as usual. It put my entire family in the Christmas spirit for sure !! Well worth the trip to NYC !!
