East Greenbush tax collector sees dirty trick in letter - UPDATE

East Greenbush tax collector sees dirty trick in letter
Town's GOP chief pays cash for ad listing seemingly fictitious writer

EAST GREENBUSH -- The town's Republican committee chairman, Chris DeFruscio, paid cash to publish a political-attack advertisement in a local publication that was made to appear like it was a letter-to-the-editor from a town resident.

The letter, which contained false accusations directed at a town official, was attributed to "Martha Andiago, East Greenbush," which is apparently a fictitious name.

The advertisement appeared in Thursday's edition of The Advertiser, a non-subscription weekly publication mailed to town residents. The letter targeted Toni Murphy, a Democrat seeking re-election Tuesday as East Greenbush's tax collector. The letter accused Murphy of rudely ordering an elderly man at a recent town meeting to "Sit Down!"

"While a senior citizen was trying to explain his disapproval of the way he was treated at the tax receiver's office and the tax assessor's office, Ms. Murphy was very vocal and rude in telling the elderly man to 'SIT DOWN!'" the letter reads. "HOW DARE SHE, or any public figure, including Rick McCabe (who did the same thing to another speaker), try to silence people who are only looking for this administration to do the job they were elected and hired to do."

Robert Wells, 75, who is the man referred to in the letter, said it did not happen and Murphy has always treated him with courtesy. He said he went to the town meeting to appeal for a more fair process in resolving a tax issue and asked if he could sit while speaking.

"At some point, a female voice said something to the effect 'Yes, sit down,' or an offer was made to get me a chair and someone said 'by all means, sit down,'" he said, adding that he feels he is being "used" in a political fight.

Reached Saturday, DeFruscio sought to distance himself from the ad and repeatedly talked over a reporter. He refused to answer questions about his role in purchasing the ad or to identify the alleged author, and would not provide her contact information.

"You don't understand, it's not me. It's not the committee," DeFruscio said.

However, DeFruscio admitted paying $148 in cash to publish the letter when he went in-person to the office of The Advertiser on Oct. 28.

Susan St. Pierre, a sales rep for The Advertiser, said DeFruscio visited her office that day for about an hour and purchased several political ads. She said he paid by check for all of the ads except the attack letter, which he paid for with cash.

On Saturday, DeFruscio, 49, told the Times Union: "I had an envelope. She (Andiago) was with us. She was outside. I went inside and dropped stuff off to Sue."

But St. Pierre said she did not notice anyone else outside her office when DeFruscio was there. Under a standard verification process she called a number listed for the letter's author and a woman confirmed her name was "Martha Andiago." A search of public databases, including voter and property records, shows no one by that name in New York state.

On Friday, as questions surfaced about the authenticity of the letter, St. Pierre said she called back the number, which is a local residential listing, and the woman again confirmed her name is "Martha Andiago." St. Pierre said she told the woman they were investigating the matter and asked her to come to the Advertiser's office with identification.

"Then I said 'May I ask your address' and there was silence on the phone for a minute, and then the dial tone," St. Pierre said.

Looking back, St. Pierre said there were several "red flags" about DeFruscio's ad purchase.

"He had told me that several people were pitching in to pay for that ad," St. Pierre said. "My original email I received for that ad wasn't signed by "Martha Andiago," it was a different name but Chris changed it."

She said DeFruscio asked her to make out a receipt for that particular ad to "Martha Andiago" while other ads were invoiced to the town GOP committee.

DeFruscio on Saturday insisted the person who wrote the letter was real and that she would contact the Times Union to verify her identity. But no one called on her behalf. DeFruscio also said her name was spelled wrong in the letter, but he declined to provide correct spelling or her telephone number. He also would not say how he knows the woman or why he had paid for her advertisement.

"She is a real person," DeFruscio said. "The girl's getting upset because she thinks her freedom of speech is being altered and she wants to know why it's going on."

Murphy said the ad is part of a pattern of dirty political tactics by town Republican leaders.

"They'll do anything at this point, you know elections," Murphy said. "Usually my position isn't contested like this. I just collect the taxes and don't make decisions on who to hire."

Murphy is being challenged for the job, which pays about $44,000 annually, by Corine Sheldon, a Republican. Sheldon could not be reached for comment.

"I'm angry because I was totally taken advantage of," St. Pierre said. "I've always liked Chris and I've known him for a long, long time. I don't take it well when people lie."

Attack letter spurs feud
Dems: Daughter of GOP operative used for attack; GOP: letter real

EG Talks would like to point out that Mr. DeFruscio apparently did not produce the name "Marta Santiago" when interviewed for Sunday's article.

Toni Murphy says it best at the conclusion of the follow-up article:

"The letter is fake. Martha Andiago is fake," she said. "Everybody who was at that meeting, and anyone who knows me, knows that the facts of the letter Chris paid for are totally fabricated. And now we know that Chris DeFruscio and his friend Bill Mahan doctored the name of Bill's daughter, Marta Mahan-Santiago, so they could use her in case they got caught. And they did get caught."

  1. Well, Well, Well - E. Chris DeFruscio involved in a scandal over false accusations and lies....who would have thought that could happen!! Well....I for one. I've known Chris long enough to know that anything he says - you have to question. Deceit comes naturally to some...right Chris....

As a town Democrat, I want to thank Chris for all the help this year. Chris buddy, you're our number 1 vote getter! Ann Taylor, please spin this with Cristo - you guys are our number 2 vote getters!

Chris, Mike and Ann, I would request one thing of you guys...and gal....please don't ever decide to help the Democrats...please.

    Thank you ever so much.

  2. Some people will be calling for Ericole Chris DeFruscio to resign over his latest scandal. Ericole...resist....stay on. We need someone leading the Republican party like you do - keeping it dirty, dirty, dirty!

    Good Job!

  3. I'm sure the Tayor/Cristo blog will be condemning Chris DeFruscio for his underhanded dealings over the article he paid for in the Advertiser. Knowing how fair-minded Ann and Mike are, they have to take Chris behind the barn to the wood pile to administer his whooping!

What was Chris thinking - is that dumb or is he gullible enough to have done this at the urging of someone else who has called the shots for him in the past?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

  4. Remember folks, a vote for the "Hometown Team" is an endorsement of Demento De Fruscio and his underhanded ways. You MUST get out and talk to your neighbors. The future of our town depends on it!

  5. It is sad that Anne R.C. blames others for DeFruscio's misdeeds. This has truly made up my mind, I will not vote on Tuesday and it is time to get out of Dodge. I think this town has gone down the dumper.

  6. What a sad state of affairs on the part of the Republican party. Sadly, there is not one person on this crazy train with enough class to hang their head in shame. Tsk, Tsk

  8. So, where is that Mr. Johnson and Mr. Mooney and their candidates with their ethics issues? What's up now, eh? Just goes to show what classless phonies they all are. And, can't you just hear the Republican candidates? "We have nothing to do with Mr. Defruscio." Right. They were all present at that board meeting and not one of them placed a call since Thursday to Toni Murphy to say, "look, we have nothing to do with that, we were at the meeting, you did not say anything at all." Why? Because they are a product of Mr. Defruscio, all hand picked, plain and simple. Yeah, some hometown team, eh? Everyone of them, classless, inexperienced, shooting their ignorant mouths off playing everyone in this town as idiots. Sue Mangold's piece a few weeks back in the Advertiser said it best..something to the effect of, "she enjoyed campaigning and reaching out to the EDUCATED voter in the town".....that's the operative word, educated. Maybe we need to start showing photo ID's (licenses) when we come to vote; can only imagine what the Republican Chairman and his candidates have planned for Tuesday. It's just unbelievable how it's one lie after another all the time with those people.
Vote Row A, D or E for credible, responsible, educated, experienced candidates to keep the town moving forward. McCabe, Malone, Murphy, and Mangold.

  9. Anon 7:39 - I didn't blame anyone for DeFruscio's misdeeds. I took a leap of faith that Ann & Mike would take him to task for his desperate act. Perhaps when you leave Dodge, you can take a class somewhere that teaches comprehension. Bye, Bye!

  10. I know many members of the DeFruscio family and they are a proud and loving group. Chris has chosen a path that confilicts with his family values and that is sad. However, it certainly isn't a reflection of the rest of the family.

Chris, come clean and do the right thing - no more games. You have a chance to be the man your family would be proud of. Cooperate with the investigation and let the chips fall where they may. No more lies!

  11. Are you shocked that DeFruscio acted like a sleaze ball? I'm not nor are half the people in this town. I feel sorry for his family. I know some of them and they are nice people. Thanks Times Union for printing this story and revealing the true character of the Republican Chairman. I noticed nothing is on the other blog. Embarrassed?

  13. Cristo/Taylor and their cronies must be pulling their hair out trying to find a spin on this one. God, I hope we don't end up with a bald chia pet! Kind of hard to put a decent spin on this stuff!

  14. Anne, you really show how much class your have. Maybe I did misunderstand your statement, "What was Chris thinking - is that dumb or is he gullible enough to have done this at the urging of someone else who has called the shots for him in the past?" This statement made me think that maybe you were in fact blaming others.

To attack someone who may bag to differ on what you wrote and then state "you can take a class somewhere that teaches comprehension". I am a product of EGCSD. You really need a class in manners. Apparently not all of us think the way that you do but personal attacks are not the answer.

This is an election that I will skip. Both parties really need some anger management. Buh Bye

DENFRUSCION THE M*R*N - sorta fits now ~ huh?!?!

Failure Taylor , Mulvey and Cristo owe EGB residents an honest explanation - Denfruscion is too stupid to do this on his own - he was told what to do by our County Legislator- CHRISTO !!
Oh - and you too - Johnny Torino - Denfruscions left-hand man ! Larry Lenartz and Bill Mahan as well - you've all been caught in your dirty little scheme to pull of an ELECTION SCAM and YOU GOT CAUGHT!!!

Damn right I'm mad- and I have a right to be mad ! Ann Taylor should move away and take her boyfriend with her.

Question: inquiring minds want to know - LANGLEY-FIACCO-GILBERT - what was their involvment in this election scandel? We all know Sheldon knew - Taylor just about admitted that.
Langley and company - YOU OWE US A REASONABLE EXPLANATION - and don't lie or skirt the issue either !

  20. Defruscio has proven himself to be a lying cheat. But I would bet everything I own that Dan, Ed, Keith and Corine had nothing to do with this and are equally shocked and pissed off at him. I know they have already had major problems with the party. They are the victims in this, ironically. Chris hurt them the most. What a buffoon. But we thank him for his help!

  26. Anonymous at 9:57, I'll take that bet. This thing exploded immediately three days ago.
Three days later now, and not a peep out of any one of your presumed innocent candidates from criscoville.
Plenty of people involved in this major buzz all around town, but not one of these supposed saviors, with their hollow promises of new leadership, and hometown values has chimed in.
No claims of innocence, no statements about clearing the air, or restoring order, and most of all no hint of common decency to express concern over how a good person was slandered by a group plan of lies, secrecy, and slime.

I know Dan Fiacco said many times that his campaign wouldn't have any of that nasty stuff from last time in it. What does he say now-- NOTHING. Silence Dan? That's the kind of Leadership you're selling here? You woke up with fleas didn't you?

  30. I'm writing again, because I don't understand why my post at 12:28 was taken down. I have talked to other people who were at the pancake Breakfast on Sherwood Ave today, and verified that Dan Fiacco did approach Toni Murphy there , and extend his regrets over the nasty incident with lies about her in the Advertiser.

Why shouldn't it be acknowledged that he did the right thing? And I feel my 12:04 challenge to him shouldn't be hanging out there unedited, after he took action on his own before it was posted.

In talking to those in attendance this morning, I also found out that Ed Gilbert was in the room too, and that he maintained his "Ivory Tower" image by not making any contact with Toni. Not surprisingly Corine Sheldon wasn't seen taking part in this regular community activity, any more than she has ever been seen as an participant in positive community events any time in the past, and Keith Langley who made his first ever appearance at a Board meeting in October wasn't there either.

But while Dan Fiacco did step up to take the high road on a personal basis, he will still be tarnished by his association with the classless mud slingers who support him. I'll always believe those flea bites are really continuing to itch.

  32. Yes Dan did apologize to Toni. the post was taken down because we were not sure it was true. My question is how did he every get involved with them, and also why would Mahan let his daughter be used by Chris, she sounded so confused, poor girl.

  33. One question;
If it was a misspelling, why did the woman acknowledge that she was MARTHA ANDIAGO, when she was contacted by the reporter?? Wouldn't she have corrected the reporter?
Thats the problem with lying, you can't emember all the stories you've told. Stay classy Chris!!!

  35. Orkin Man,

Thanks for resubmitting your comment. Your initial post was removed because we could not confirm that Mr. Fiacco had extended "his regrets over the nasty incident with lies about her in the Advertiser".

In retrospect, EG Talks should have delayed acting until we could confirm your account. The removal of your initial comment was in no way intended to slight Mr. Fiacco.

Again, thanks for resubmitting your comment.

  37. Insider report from Town Hall.

Chris Defruscio's perfectly planned coup is having its predictable result. There's been a steady stream of support rolling in for Toni Murphy, with phone calls and people stopping at her office. They are all saying that the reports in the newspaper are shocking, and ridiculous. They're all saying they will vote for her and her team, and they're all talking it up with their friends.

So let's hear a big cheer for Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I certainly hope you are right. Toni deserves to be re-elected. Sheldon doesn't have any skills or knowledge for the position. She isn't worth $44k salary. She'll fine tune everything and micromanage and then tell the county, state etc that things need to done on her timeline not theirs. She'll criticize townsfolk behind their backs as she did with teachers, staff at school. We want someone who will work and learn with others. Not someone who believes they are the only smart person in town.

  39. Why do the repooblicans think they need to be dirty and cheap in the last two election campaigns?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have tried to remain quiet throughout this election and have even stayed away from the BLOGS (until now). After reading the TU yesterday and reading the 'other' BLOG, all I have to say is 'WOW'. I witnessed a lot of things while my dad was in the Senate for 20 years but I NEVER saw the amount of hatred and deception that I am seeing in EG. I am not saying that the Democrats are perfect (who is), but the Rebublicans should be completely ashamed of themselves for what they have done. The head of the party is that devious and desperate that he has to send a 'fake' letter into the advertiser? Other Republicans are denying they knew anything about it? Lets get real folks. Chris D. did not do this on his own. Parties stick together and plan their attacks together. Its just the way it is. It doesnt mean that the candidites are to blame but there was help from someone. Based on all the reading I have done over the last 2 days, I can make a couple of guesses (but I'll keep those names to myself and let you all come to the same conclusion).
Regarding the 'other' blog, I have seen Ann Taylor talk about hatred and how she doesnt hate anyone. If anyone followed that post, she used the word so much that I stopped counting. To me, that appears to be a lot of hatred coming from her!! Perhaps because she cannot get elected by the people in EG?? Who knows.

I also saw a few comments about the Asst Chief of Police, Mike Condo, and the fact that he has a certian lawn sign in his yard (HORRORS). Since when was that any of Ann Taylors business (or anyone elses for that fact). Ann had no business making any comment about that. Well, Ann really has no business opening her mouth about anything but thats besides the fact.

I saw another post from someone about the Hart family and the fact that they are buying property on 9 & 20. Ok, whats the problem here? Is that illegal?? At least someone is trying to help out the town. If you feel the need to complain about who is purchasing the land, then get your checkbook out and buy it yourself.

These are just a few of the things I will mention. I could go on and on.
The Republicans say they want to see change. My guess is that the party could do better if they didn't have people like Chris D. heading things up. I don't think Ann T. or Mike C. are helping the situation either and if I were a Republican, I would ask them to refrain from blogging or opening their mouths at all. They have done nothing but hurt their own party over the past few years. I tried to tell them last year that negative campaining will backfire on them in the end. Guess they don't listen!! Hey, its only my opinion! Good luck to all the Donkeys!!

  41. Insider at 12:24, I get your sarcastic point, but I can tell you seriously who won't be giving a cheer for DeFruscio, The State Republican Committee. You know those guys at 315 State St. in Albany, the return address on all those glossy mailers we received for the Fiacco Fumble Team.

They spent thousand and thousands of dollars to mailing out those shiny postcards with all those shiny teeth. Trying to push a campaign for people with no specific plans, and no experience to back up their empty promises. Then mud meister Chris drops $148 in small unmarked bills and a scrap of used toilet paper at the Adertiser to derail their efforts, and make them all look like fools.
