State's GOP primary Tuesday

Times Union
Staff report
Published 10:54 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2012

Registered Republicans head to the polls across New York on Tuesday to determine the makeup of the delegation the state will send to the GOP national convention this summer. Despite the suspension of his campaign two weeks ago, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum will remain on the ballot along with Rep. Ron Paul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and — the delegate front-runner by a wide margin — former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Because of rule changes since the state party's 2008 "winner-take-all" primary, New York's contest will dole out 95 delegates in three blocs:

58: Two apiece for the winner of each of New York's 29 current congressional districts;

34: A set of "at-large" delegates, to be distributed proportionally, or in toto to any candidate who pulls more than 50 percent of the vote;

  3: State Party Chair Ed Cox and two other New York members of the Republican National Committee who are free to make up their own mind; Cox and Jennifer Saul-Rich have already declared for Romney.

Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m. To find your polling place, contact your county board of elections:

Board of Education Adopts 2012-2013 School Budget

The East Greenbush Central School Board of Education adopted a budget for the 2012-2013 school year at its April 4th meeting. The budget totals $85,121,842 and represents a 0.46 percent increase in spending over the current year’s budget. The 2012-2013 budget carries a 2.39 percent tax levy increase, which is below the state tax levy threshold of 2.58 percent.

The adopted budget sustains the current educational programming and preserves educational opportunities for district students. The budget includes the elimination of five full-time equivalent (FTE) support staff positions; four FTE teaching positions were eliminated, primarily through retirements that will not be replaced.

You can learn more about the budget at a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goff Middle School Cafeteria. Because the proposed budget falls under the state tax levy threshold, a simple majority is needed for passage.

The Budget Vote and Board of Education Election will be held May 15; polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Bell Top Elementary School, Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School, Green Meadow Elementary School, and Goff Middle School. For information on voting and voter registration click here.
